Rappler Journalist and CEO Maria Ressa wins Nobel Peace Prize

Oct 8, 2021 — The 2021 Nobel Prize for Peace has been awarded to journalist and Rappler CEO, Maria Ressa.

Maria’s courageous, years-long advocacy for press freedom has been recognized, alongside fellow journalist Dmitry Andreyevich Muratov “for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace” according to NobelPrize.org

Beginning in 2018, DVXD has been a partner to Maria and Rappler to co-create a news platform that aims to bridge journalism and civic engagement.

Earlier this year, she spoke with DVXD Principal, Derek Vaz, about the risk that social media tech giants, particularly Facebook, play in destabilizing democracy and press freedom.

Maria’s fearless pursuit of press freedom in the Philippines has drawn intense pressure from the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte. The 2020 Sundance-selected documentary A Thousand Cuts by Ramona Diaz details Maria and Rappler’s challenges amidst Duterte’s efforts to stifle the press – including being arrested numerous times on charges that numerous international rights groups have called to be dismissed.

As a studio dedicated to a vision of shared progress, DVXD is honored to call Maria a partner and friend. We congratulate her on this well-deserved recognition and remain inspired by her and Rappler’s mission to speak truth to power.
